Activities at Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge

Seward, Alaska

What to Do in Seward, Alaska

Situated at the head of Resurrection Bay, Seward serves as the gateway to Kenai Fjords National Park - and the departure point for a stay at Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge. Seward is a charming town and well worth taking the time to explore. A day in Seward offers the chance to experience small town Alaskan life; browse the unique local shops of “downtown,” enjoy a hearty meal of fresh-caught halibut down by the harbor or stretch your legs on a hike to nearby Exit Glacier. Here are a few of our recommended attractions in Seward:

Alaska SeaLife Center: Alaska's only public aquarium and ocean wildlife rescue center! Located in downtown Seward, this "window to the sea" features up-close viewing of puffins, sea lions, octopuses and more. Guided tours offer an in-depth exploration of Alaska's marine ecosystem. Open Monday through Thursday 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Friday through Sunday 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. 800.224.2525; www.alaskasealife.org.

Exit Glacier: Located just 15 minutes outside of Seward, Exit Glacier is the only glacier in Kenai Fjords National Park that is accessible by the road system. The lower trail is a gentle half-mile path leading to the face of the glacier, while the more challenging upper trail ascends to an overlook.

Ididaride Dog Sled Tours: Experience Alaska's state sport, dog mushing, with 2004 Iditarod champion Mitch Seavey and his family at Ididaride Dog Sled Tours. Go for an adventurous two-mile dogsled ride along Box Canyon Creek; in the summertime, wheeled dogsleds are used. 800.478.3139; www.ididaride.com.

Historic Downtown Seward Shops & Restaurants: Stroll along the waterfront, indulge in freshly made saltwater taffy, browse art in a unique coffeehouse or ask any local the story of Mt. Marathon. Most shops and restaurants are concentrated around the boat harbor or "downtown" between 3rd and 5th Avenues. www.seward.com.
