Wildlife and Whale Watching Opportunities

Outstanding Alaska wildlife viewing is a key feature of every aspect of the Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge experience.

By land or sea, Kenai Fjords National Park offers some of the best wildlife viewing in Alaska. Featuring multiple ways to explore the protected seacoast, a stay at Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge allows guests to seek out amazing wildlife sightings by foot, kayak and small boat cruise.

Depending on the time of year, Kenai Fjords National Park plays host to three different species of whale. The California Gray Whale can be found frolicking in the Kenai Fjords in early summer, en route to their final destination of Alaska's Bering and Chukchi Seas (these whales have the longest migratory pattern of any mammal - over 12,500 miles of coastline between Alaska's northern seas and Mexico's Baja Peninsula!). Humpback Whales also frequent these waters; learn about their diverse methods of feeding such as baleen straining and the group bubble net technique. In addition, there are three varieties of Orca Whale seen in Kenai Fjords National Park in the summertime; year-round resident Orcas eat fish while the migratory Orcas prey on other marine mammals. Further from the coast, offshore Orcas will even prey on sharks.

In addition to whale watching, seek out Steller sea lions, sea otters, Dall's porpoises and more on the marine wildlife and glacier cruise. Bald eagles and puffins represent some of the most charismatic examples of the myriad of birdlife that call the park home; some 18 different species of seabird flock to the Kenai Fjords to nest each year, resulting in a vibrant population of over 50,000 birds.
